The sea on the coast of the Val di Cornia is characterised by sandy beaches, many of which have been awarded the “blue flag” for their shallow clear water, white sand and calm waves. The landscape of the coastline varies from rocky cliffs, pine forests and Mediterranean scrub.
The Cornia valley, in addition to its countryside appeal, is also ideal for a holiday by the sea.
Its famous beaches include: the Sterpaia Coastal Park (Riotorto, Piombino), those of San Vincenzo and the coastal park of Rimigliano, the Gulf of Baratti (Buca delle Fate and Cala San Quirico), the beaches of Follonica and the park of Cala Violina (Scarlino).
There are several options for visitors to bring their dogs to the sea, for example, the Dog Beach in San Vincenzo and Pascià Glam in Piombino. Heading back towards the estate, guests will pass the park of Montioni, where one can find botanical trails and historical ruins. Continuing up to Monterotondo M.mmo, one can visit the Geothermal Park of the Biancane and its museum, Mubia.
The Val di Cornia is full of unexpected food and wine delights.
The wines of the Doc Suvereto and Monteregio of Massa Marittima compete with the noblest labels of neighbouring areas and represent a pleasant discovery for those looking for a round, but sincerely peasant, Tuscan Sangiovese.
The vineyards of Tua Rita and Petra are among the best known in the area, while if you continue further north and south, you will be met with the excellence of Bolgheri’s acclaimed wines and those of the area around Grosseto. This trail of enological masterpieces winds its way all the way to Chianti, where travellers can taste the traditional flavours of these Florentine wines.
It is possible to enjoy the specialties of Tuscan cuisine in all areas of the valley. Travellers will find a prevalence of fish towards the coast, while heading inland, the traditional dishes include beef and game.
The restaurant at San Ottaviano offers typical Maremma dishes, vegetarian plates, beer-based dishes from our brewery and unique recipes with our own products from the estate. The ingredients used in our kitchen are local or from our own production. The restaurant is open six nights a week and reservations are required.
Pets are always welcome at San Ottaviano! They are allowed to run free on all trails and are welcome in all areas of our agriturismo, including the restaurant, as long as they are on a leash and their behavior is respectful to the other guests. We now offer three villas with fenced-in gardens at San Ottaviano.
The 250 hectares of land surrounding San Ottaviano offer infinite trails for walking and hiking. Some trails even lead to the river Cornia or waterfalls where your pets may swim in peace. Within 30 minutes, you can reach the sea where there are many beaches including those especially for dogs (for example, Dog Beach in San Vincenzo and Pasha Glam Beach in Piombino).
